Voting Question: How is Full Sail University's Recording Arts program?
I heard a slew of bad things about Full Sail, primarily the high cost and gamble of an outcome. I also heard a few good things from students who benefited in the end from it, but the negatives seem more prevalent. So I'm asking again the same question I asked about 4-5 years ago: Is Full Sail, particularly the Audio Engineering aspect, a school worth going to?
Let me also sum up my present situation: I attended DeVry University in 2006 for Video Game Programming and dropped out that same year due to no social life, bad off-campus roommates, expenses I couldn't handle, and a horrible impression of the school. I transferred to a state college in Pennsylvania and obtained a BA in psychology in 2010. I have been working 3rd shift in grocery stores ever since, hate psychology, and don't have a single job title to search for that my degree qualifies me for. I'm losing time to live a good life while I'm young, and I am highly interested in music and what recording is all about. Full Sail appeals to me for the fact that they waste no time in shoving work at you and offer all the technology you need to do it. And in the meantime, you live in Orlando near the beaches on your own in a local apartment instead of at one of your divorced parents' houses like a disgruntled teenager. So ideally, I'd learn the ropes of the industry with no breaks to forget anything from previous classes, build my own life independent of my past, and land a job doing something besides minimum wage high school kid work.
The problem is what if I rebuild a mound of debt and find the music industry is fading and in no need of engineers, or specifically engineers with a Full Sail education? People say it's better to DIY the skills. I ask them how the heck am I supposed to do that if I don't live in a studio and was not brought up in a heavily musical household? It's a huge life gamble to either leave grocery life behind or end up in an even worse situation, so I'd like to know if an Associates or Bachelors in recording from Full Sail is worth it.
