Open Question: why does most people think games are a waste of time?
Well yes, they do consume a lot of time.
But don't you think that over all the years, games were always fun because as technology always gets more advanced, new ideas are created. I think I've first touched games when I was like 3, for more than 15 years I still love playing video games, no matter how much it distracts me from my social life. I couldn't last 15 years for anything else in life (not literally), i.e. I have talent in piano but lost interest after like 6 years.
Working or doing business in the gaming industry actually makes good money, a fun occupation at the same time, unlike surfers who makes measly money in the water or nothing at all.
