Open Question: Proper punishment for stealing?
What is the typical legal punishment if a person is caught stealing $200 cash in the state of Arizona (or whatever state you might be in). I know that it's "up to $2,500 fine, 6 months in jail and probation", but I'm talking about no prior history. My young son took $200 from me and put it in his piggy bank. we'd like to mete out some appropriate punishment to try to nip it in the bud so that he understands that it is a big deal. Restricting video game play just doesn't seem appropriate.
