Open Question: What in your opinion makes a compelling Video Game?
I'm talking about a Video Game that is 100% squared away. The ultimate in storytelling, visuals, co-op, multiplayer, etc. Something that just screams best of the best.
Video Ganes have come a long way in 20+ years. From the Atari to PS3 & Xbox 360. There have been innovations in hardware and software. Nintendo pretty much dominated the 90's until Sony releases the PlayStation. And in a way it still did. The Nintendo Wii has outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360, but is often brushed off because it's not considered a hardcore gaming console. But more for the casual gamer.
But what sells the console is the game. And for a game to sell, it needs to be compelling, edgy, something that yanks your eyes from you head and shouts look at this! To do this, game need to have a good story or campaign, impressive visuals, synced audio, co-op, and multiplayer.
VERY FEW video games these days have all or most of these qualities. Most will focus on one or the other. Today's "Killer App" is between Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Halo. But each lacks qualities that make it a perfect game. All three games focus more on multiplayer. None have a very memorable single player campaign. Most of Halo's designs are inspired by James Cameron's Aliens so they're not truly original. Battlefield and Call of Duty's campaigns are nothing more the video game versions of a Michael Bay action flick. Completely predictable. Modern Warfare 3's campaign is the worst by far. Just about everyone dies, save for Price and Frost. And Frost's fate is never revealed.
When you think of a compelling story campaign, instantly we think of RPGs. And for good reason. Role Playing Games allow gamer's to fully immerse themselves in the environment. But even they lack elements that make them the perfect game. Most don't have multiplayer or even co-op.
There are few games that come to mind when I think of perfection. Most of these game are missing maybe one of the qualities I described above. When I think of the perfect video game or perfect franchise. I think of...
Borderlands
Assassin's Creed
L.A. Noire
Bioshock
Red Dead Redemption
Batman: Arkham Asylum/City
All of these games listed have incredible storylines. Impressive visuals. Great voice acting, especially L.A. Noire. Fun Co-op or Multiplayer. Borderlands is probably the best in my opinion. It has hours and hours of replay. It's a RPG and a FPS, or RPS as I like to call it. It features the best co-op of any game out there. Other games could learn a thing from it.
What do y'all think?
