Voting Question: Why Does Everyone Hate The USA?
I've always wondered why everyone hates the US. I mean, we're not imperialistic. We haven't annexed a region since the Spanish-American war (which was over 100 years ago). We're the first military superpower in the history of civilization to not try taking over the world. People berate us for our foreign policy cons, but never for it's pros. For example, we helped take out Gadaffi and free the Libyan rebels from oppression. We didn't kill 1 civilian.
We also aid other regions. We give Africa 7 billion dollars a year to fight HIV/AIDS. We pump out some of the world's most popular movies, music, TV and video games. We create some of the world's most popular websites (Yahoo, Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc). We recently landed a rover on Mars, and lead the world in space exploration. There are a lot of good things about the US, but it seems because of our terrible media, only the loudest, most polarized parts of the US are represented to the rest of the world. Idiots like Rush Limbaugh only have 3% of the US population as listeners. I live in a very rural, southern town in the US, and most of my friends like me are atheists, or just plain hate religion.
I'm not saying the US is the best country in the world, far from it. We have a lot of faults, but then again, which countries don't? Why is it that I never hear about any faults from Europe, or Canada, etc? I only ever hear about America's faults over the internet. I'm not so naive as to think Europe and Canada are perfect either.
So I guess I'm just wondering is why does everyone hate us so much? Is it truly because we're hated, or because it's en vogue right now to hate us, like a meme of sorts? Talking to people over the internet has shown me that a lot of non-Americans almost have a Freudian, visceral hatred for this country. I don't think the US is the greatest country on Earth, but I am proud of being an American, just like I'm sure Germans are proud of being German, Brit's are proud of being British, etc. Whatever happened to rationale patriotism when it came to the US?
Sorry if I went on a bit of a rant. Why does everyone hate us so much?
To Nelson - That seems like a bit of a reductionist reason to explain the world's animosity towards us. I mean for example, the closest that Israel and Palestine came to accomplishing a peace negotiation was when George Bush Sr. threatened to cut of Israel's loan guarantees.
To Mark - Why is my "rant" counter-productive? I don't think I had any inaccuracies in my post, everything I said I was true.
To Liz - How could you tell what political party someone subscribes to just by their misogyny and racism? I've come across racism and homophobia over the internet from all sorts of people, from all sorts of countries (I usually click their profile to see their country of origin). Just because someone is a racist over the internet, doesn't automatically make them a Republican.
