Open Question: How hard would it be for an average joe like myself to build a computer?

I desperately want a quality desktop and have been searching about online... mind you, my knowledge is fairly limited so I've just been going off reviews. Pretty much everywhere I turn though, I read that building your own is a lot cheaper and usually results in a better machine. Is that really true?

This might sound silly but, I really only want a quality desktop so I can play video games on their highest settings (I like the visuals) with the main game being Sims 3. I was reading that the most important thing is the graphics or video card... are they the same?

If you can't tell, I am not very computer suave and my experience with anything electrical or mechanical is pretty much null... with that being said, would it still be a better idea to build my own or should I just buy a ready made computer from a store? How easy is it to mess up when building a computer and where is a good place to buy parts (I live in Australia)?
